Obhoyaronnoโ Bangladesh Animal welfare organisations, A K Khan Healthcare Trust along with actor and activist Jaya Ahsan have filed a writ petition before the High Court seeking urgent action against the alleged illegal horse meat trade in Bangladesh.
The petition was filed on 11 May 2026. Barrister Saqeb Mahbub, Dr Cynthia Farid and Advocate Sajid Hassan are expected to represent the petitioners before the Court.
According to the petition, meat from sick horses was allegedly being sold in local markets for human consumption, in some cases disguised as beef. The petitioners raised concerns over the serious public health risks linked to the incident and claimed that despite repeated communications with the relevant authorities, no effective steps had been taken. The writ seeks a proper investigation into the alleged horse meat trade uncovered in Gazipur, identification of those involved, and submission of the investigation findings before the High Court within a fixed timeframe.
The petitioners have also requested the Court to direct the concerned authorities to prepare national guidelines within 60 days to prevent similar incidents in the future, stop the auction of sick and confiscated horses, and establish shelters and rehabilitation facilities for rescued animals.
